Portland Street Planting Project

Green Synergy was pleased to secure funding from the City of Lincoln Council’s Community Chest funded by UK Shared Prosperity Funding to work in partnership with residents and volunteers to create market garden planting spaces on Portland Street.

Fly Tipping near the properties

The areas to the rear of the Portland Street properties were blighted by fly tipping and the wish for local residents was to create places where they could grow fruit and vegetables.

Initial Planters Installations

5 planters were initially installed on site and filled with peat free compost and planted out with winter cabbages, winter lettuces and pak choi plants.

New Flower Bed Creation

A brand new flower bed and planting area was dug out and then planted up with 8 English Bluebells ‘Hyancinthoides Non-Scripta’; 30 Dwarf Daffodil ‘More and More’; 10 Dwarf Daffodil ‘Tete Boucle’; 8 Tall Daffodil ‘Sweet Desire’ bulbs, 12 Crocus ‘Flower Record’ bulbs and 20 Narcissus ‘Tamara’.

The bed was also planted with 6 Primrose ‘Pink’ plants; 6 Primrose ‘Yellow’ plants; 24 Winter Pansy ’Winter Mix’ plants and 1 Roan tree.

The bed was mulched following the winter snow with 120 litres of woodchip

New Vegetable Planters

A new deep vegetable planter was built, painted and installed on the site where fly tipping had taken place.

Greenhouse and Growing Wall

Our project team also installed a moveable green house to protect plants from bad weather and also a growing wall for herbs and in due course strawberry plants.

Project Outputs

Following the planters installation, sessions were undertaken to infill with peat free compost and then the herbs, vegetables and perennial plants were planted into the planters. The herbs and vegetables chosen for planting would enable local residents to use them in cooking. In addition, 25 packets of seeds for vegetables, perennials and herbs were provided to our volunteer resident on the project.

The outputs for the project were that 20 herb plants have been planted on site, 67 plants have been planted on the site, 52 Vegetable plants planted, 88 bulbs procured and planted on the site and 1 Rowan Tree planted.

In addition to these deliverables:

  • 25 Packets of vegetable and herb seeds for future growing
  • 350 litres of peat free compost have been laid on the site.
  • 120 litres of woodchip
  • 2 litres of paint for planters
  • 2 Wall live planters – hanging
  • 1 Planting Greenhouse
